Rombaut: Innovating Sustainable Footwear

in News

We continue to introduce you to the brands represented in our store, expanding our collection to offer our customers a diverse selection of designs and styles. As part of our commitment to partnering with green, vegan and environmentally conscious brands, we are proud to feature Rombaut.

Dedicated to sustainability and ethical sourcing, Rombaut aligns perfectly with our values, offering innovative and eco-friendly footwear options that not only look great but also support a more sustainable future for our planet.

Mats Rombaut, the founder of the brand, was born in Ghent, Belgium, in 1987. A multi-disciplinary creative personality, he now lives and works in Paris, drawing inspiration from various art forms, natural and scientific processes, and especially music. Before establishing his own footwear brand under his surname, he worked with such names as Lanvin and Damir Doma. It was at Lanvin, where Mats worked on shoe design starting in 2008, that he realised he wanted to continue focusing on this industry.

Being a vegan, Mats Rombaut struggled to find footwear that aligned with his lifestyle and beliefs. In 2013, he launched his first independent project and introduced his first vegan collection of footwear.

To create Rombaut's footwear masterpieces, the brand uses natural plant-based materials such as apple waste, bamboo and corn. For durability, synthetic materials were incorporated, ensuring the models last for many seasons and preserve their great look.

Mats aims to set an example with his environmental goals, striving to change the fashion system from within by creating plant-based footwear and accessories that have a reduced impact on the environment. Currently, Mats is the creative director and founder of the Rombaut brand, a co-founder of the Paris-based eco-friendly brand Virón, and he also serves as a creative consultant and sustainability expert.

Rombaut's limited collections are associated with a new generation of critical thinkers, artists and creatives worldwide. The brand offers a strong aesthetic where colour, shape and detailing are unique and future-oriented. Renowned as a leading brand for vegan and eco-friendly footwear, Rombaut aims to pave the way forward for a world in need of transformation.

In Mats’ own words, in the beginning it was very extreme, he made no compromises; he used only plant-based fibers, but in the end it was a very expensive product and could fall apart very easily because of technical issues that come from using solely natural fibers.
Mats had to adapt the concept, and although the shoes were no longer biodegradable, they became more fashionable and less expensive – a product that people would want to buy. The one thing that Rombaut will always be is vegan, for ethical reasons – it’s something Mats really believes in and that will always be the case.

By frequently experimenting with cultural stereotypes and cross-pollinating archetypal footwear classics, Rombaut pioneers a fresh aesthetic of purity, prompting contemplation on the balance between optimism and gloom.

In Mats’ own words: “The ultimate goal for the future is to make shoes that are biodegradable and as eco-friendly as possible. I want to be the first brand to do it. I did it in the beginning of Rombaut in a plant-based way, and in the future I want to design more innovatively, meaning that the fabrics will be more high tech.”

Celebrities from the entertainment and music scenes such as Billie Eilish, Rina Sawayama, Poppy, Arca, Doja Cat, Sega Bodega, Minji, horsegiirL, Candela Capitan, Han from Stray Kids, Lisa from Blackpink, and more have worn and continue to wear ROMBAUT models.

The advertising campaign for Rombaut's new SS24 collection in Paris unfolds in a fantastical realm where duality and opposites converge and blend. Creating a surreal and fairy-tale landscape where boundaries blur, the spring collection comes to life as the materialization of a unique and otherworldly vision, further exploring the themes of the Rombaut world.

Introducing three surrealistic video clips inspired by the works of the greatest American film directors David Lynch and Stanley Kubrick.
